My current position is Early Childhood Therapist. I currently work with client’s birth to Kindergarten and their families to strive for changes within the family system that promote healthy relationships and mental health.

Biography

I was both a Child Welfare Scholar and a NCWWI scholar during the MSW program at UMD. I have been working in the front lines as a child protection case manager for the last 10 years, 6 of those being in tribal welfare. I have spent the majority of my professional career working with Indigenous families and communities while following and implementing the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) and the Minnesota Indian Family Preservation Act (MIFPA). Additionally, I have been training with UMD’s Tribal Training and Certification Partnership (TTCP) since November 2021.

Julie Jong Koch, MSW, LICSW

Biography

Julie Jong Koch, MSW, LICSW, is a licensed independent clinical social worker and psychotherapist at Watercourse Counseling Center in Minneapolis. She specializes in working with transracial adoptees, POCI (People of color/Indigenous people), queer & trans individuals, as well as others who have experienced individual or community trauma or marginalization. She integrates her professional training and therapeutic skills with her lived experience as a queer-identified Korean adoptee.

I hold an AS, BSW, MA, and have advocated for children as a Guardian Ad Litem since 1997. A background in Early Childhood Education, Bachelors Degree in Social Work and a Masters Degree in Forensic Mental Health. I pursued a degree in Forensic Mental Health because of personal experience working with children and adults with mental illness, many with adverse childhood experiences, including FASD and other neurobehavioral disorders resulting in out of home placements; foster care, adoption, disrupted adoptions, child protection, or involvement in the criminal justice system.

I am a county social work supervisor who specializes in ongoing Child Protection. I work in both individual and group settings to support workers in the community and parents interacting with the Child Welfare system. Each family system brings with their own strengths and areas to grow; it’s my work to walk alongside workers and families through their Child Protection journey. My name is Taylor Harman. I received my bachelor of arts degree from the University of Wisconsin River Falls in Psychology with an emphasis in Biology in 2015. I went on to complete my Master’s in Counseling and Psychological Services from Saint Mary's University of Minnesota in 2018. I become a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in Minnesota in 2021. I have worked with children and their families, who have experienced trauma for more than 4 years.

Tarah Groettum holds a Master of Science in Education (MSEd), with a clinical counseling focus. Nicole Deters

Biography

Nicole has over 27 years’ experience in the nonprofit and public sector. She has served as Executive Director of several Minnesota and Colorado based nonprofits that promote healthy communities, including No Barriers USA, Vinland National Center, and FamilyWise. She currently serves on the Foster Care Task Force through National Council for Adoption. In addition, she is involved in bringing Quality Parenting Initiative to Minnesota, a part of the Supervised Visitation Leadership Institute, and several policy making committees.
