Trauma Based Therapy

As a marriage and family therapist, I am thrilled to be part of a field focused on people and relationships. I enjoy working with children and families, and I am passionate about creating healthy, vibrant and hopeful communities. Areas of specialty include working with trauma, attachment, adoption, foster care, kinship care and parent guidance.

I believe all families can create change with their own strengths and resources, and I look forward to helping individuals recognize their contributions to their families, workplaces and communities.

I see primarily BIPOC and make space to explore the impact of oppressive systems on identity. I have a special interest in mixed/multiracial people, transracial and transnational adoptees, and Queer & Trans BIPOC. My clinical specialty is complex trauma and dissociation for adults 18+, so I refer to other therapists for children, families, and couples.

All people are striving for well-being in their life, with ideas, goals, and opportunities available for each unique person. It is my sincere belief that most people know the direction they aim towards in life. However, life often throws us curveballs, and it's okay to ask someone to come along for part of the journey. You may need help to reframe your perspective, build up coping skills and mindfulness, process trauma, or support your relationships in order to continue on your life's journey.

Areas that I specialize in include: working with all types of families; adoptive, foster, and kinship, adult/youth adoptees, transracial parenting, communication/conflict, life transitions, childhood trauma, child development, as well as depression, anxiety, stress, and other mental health diagnosis.

Born outside of Seoul, South Korea, I am a transracial, transnational adoptee.

I love working with transracial, transnational adopted individuals (age 17+) who grew up questioning their racial and ethnic identities and wondered, “does anyone else feel this way?”

I draw from a variety of modalities, chief among them being relational (and relatable). I take a developmental and holistic approach to healing, including awareness of developmental milestones on our lives and the lingering impact on our relationships and connections to self and others.

When meeting clients I begin with the question of "What happened to you" rather than "What is wrong with you." When I get to watch and bear witness as an individual or family grows and is able to heal it humbles me! I like to walk along side those I work with in helping them develop/discover the life and relationships they desire. I also enjoy working with couples in achieving satisfying marriages or relationships.

Patty Miller, LPCC is a one of the first therapists in Minnesota to work in a Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility for children. She is employed at Northwood Children’s Services –PRTF in Duluth, MN. Patty has over 25 years of experience working with children and families. She also has a MA in Management and is a former CEO of a Children’s Advocacy Center. Patty has provided foster care to over 100 children and has advanced professional training in EMDR, Grief and Loss, Temperament Assessments and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

I primarily work with birth to age 18 children and families through the School Linked Mental Health program in Southwest Minnesota. I provide therapy through a variety of methods with the most commonly utilized treatments being TI-CPP, EMDR, CBT, and IFS.
